My wool soaker patterns are finished! I’ve tested them out quite a bit, and I couldn’t be happier with the result–meaning that now I can move on to drafting the fitteds, which have been in-the-works for a couple of months. I can’t believe how many hours I’ve spent debating between a snap-down rise or a fold-over rise for the one-size fitted. My snap press has arrived in the mail, along with a bunch of other packages containing threads, tags, elastic, and hemp. My work is moving along beautifully and I’m so excited to get this business started. It’s so rewarding to be doing what I went to school for–maybe partly because I’m proving to everyone, myself included, that I’m doing what I’ve been planning all along. And it’s working.
Fae, 8 months as of a few days ago, has her first tooth poking through (like a little shard of glass), waves “bye” to everyone (strangers included), acknowledges people on our walks by making a sound (and it comes as a nice surprise to them), laughs hysterically at Daddy when he plays with her, sings into an empty drinking glass, is very interested in my sewing machine and serger, loves dinnertime and smacks her tray for food, gets mad at Kitty (Fia) when she won’t come over, and acts ridiculously silly and cute (and stubborn). Jared says that she’s “woken up” this past month. He’s been noticing huge changes in her, and is falling in love all over again.
My life has been so busy, exciting yes, but busy while raising Fae, keeping up with the housework as I destroy and then re-destroy the place, getting rid of anything that’s not either beautiful or useful (William Morris), and using any spare moment that I get to work on my cloth diapering line–and, little by little, on my exhibit as well, which, frown, is still quite far away. Our lifestyle is steadily progressing into the one that I picture: natural, earth-friendly, peaceful, even “Arcadian” (W.H. Auden), but that last bit is a subject for another post.
My exhausted little girl is nap-nursing, while recovering from a teething episode–poor thing. I just love her so unbelievably much, and it tears at my heart when she’s hurting.
Naiad And The Moon Of 
I tried sewing up a few cloth diapers while I was pregnant and found the PUL disgusting and my machine tried to destroy it as well. What are you using to keep your diapers from leaking?
I use wool as the moisture barrier. It’s mostly waterproof, and I’ve never had a leak. I wrote about it here and a little bit here. The patterns that I just finished drafting are for wool soakers–a pull-up style cover–I’m also working on a wool wrap–a snap-on wool cover. I love wool.
sounds amazing! what did you go to school for?
Fashion Design, lol, it’s funny that I’m using it for cloth diapers at the moment. I’ll eventually be making leingerie, dresses, and other women’s wear too.
I am so eager to see your product line! With Jehryn, we went with pocket diapers with PUL covers. We simply couldn’t afford wool covers. The more I read about wool, I wish we had gone that route. I definitely want to get some next time, because we for sure want to have more children.
Thanks, I’m really excited to get it finished. It seems to take some time in the beginning of the cloth diapering research to come accross wool, and how great it is. I didn’t realize at first that there were also snap-on wrap covers, and that you really only need 3-4 covers in all. It’s such a great option.
I know lots of people who feel the love for wool. i haven’t tried it yet, but definitely see the appeal. Hey, if you decide to sell- you know I’d LOVE to do a review for you! 🙂

I never tried wool, but it sounds awesome. We use gDiapers with cloth pre-folds. I bought some, and made some out of our uglier receiving blankets:) What a great way to use your Fashion Design! (I have Sewing & Dressmaking, and am half way through a Fashion Merchandising home course:)
Nice! Fashion has been a lot of fun. I especially love how it involves everything from draping and drafting, to illustrating, to making the finished product. I’m currently having fun with the diapering line. With Fae being the center of my world right now I’m really into baby stuff, but soon I’ll add in womens’ wear–and lingerie 🙂 I’m excited to be getting back into all of this.

I ended up weaning my Lola before I was ready at 8 1/2 months, and she didn’t have teeth yet. Is it painful!?
Thanks, I love her so much. My husband and I have spent a lot of time lately thinking about what we really want, and I’m just so determined to make it happen. It’s not the “american dream,” which makes me feel that it’s really possible for us.
I can’t even tell that Fae has a tooth when she nurses. I guess that the way babies nurse only really involves their lips and tongue. Nice for us 🙂

Thanks so much. Most of my day is definitely caring for Fae (or just holding and wearing her as I do things), but I’m squeezing stuff in during the moments that I get. It’s nice to be working on things again, and if I wasn’t so passionate about it I think it would be nearly impossible. 🙂
